Should you use an automatic cat feeder? It can be a useful management tool if it suits your cat, the food, your household and the feeding plan you already follow. An automatic feeder is not self-cleaning. Dry food can leave crumbs, dust, oils and saliva, while wet food can coat the bowl, lid, compartments and seams.

Identify every removable food-contact component, which may include:
